Introducing A Busy Year

A Busy Year is a kinaesthetic,auditory, and visual programme developed to support visual learners who find it difficult to access the mathematical curriculum through traditional methods. A Busy Year provides a multilayered approach to the early mathematical curriculum as this teaching tool would reflect the models of Bruner,Cockcroft, Piaget and Liebeck and it would support the DO-TALK-RECORD (Bruner)and also the Cockcroft model of Exposition, discussion, practical work,consolidationa and investigation.
The programme has tried to address the most important points of mathematical concepts and language as identified by Barthorpe (1992).
Barthorpe (1992) identified eight areas related to the teaching of mathematical vocabulary and these are as follows:
1.Receptive Language
2.Expressive Language
3.Word Recognition
4.Recording
5.Instructional Vocabulary
6.Informative Vocabulary
7.Transfer of Vocabulary
8.Generalisation

A Busy Day has won Best Special Education ICT Resource or Equipment at the BESA Education Resources Awards 2008.

Now in their tenth successful year, The Education Resources Awards highlight the quality and diversity of educational products and resources, excellent educational establishments and the most dedicated members of the teaching profession and supplies industry, all working together to encourage the very best in education.

The Awards are organised by Affinity Media and the British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA). They are sponsored by Berol, Egton Education, Findel Education, NES Arnold and Select Education Plc.

A Busy Day Pilot

The A Busy Day pilot has recently been studied as part of a Masters Degree at Queen's University Belfast. The full report hasn't been written yet but we thought you'd like to read some of the comments from one of the parents interviewed.

"This time last year, Emma didn't really know any words, maybe in relation to associating words, but not reading the word alone and knowing what it meant ... (What I like about A Busy Day is that) it worked! It just seems to have worked, it has brought Emma out of her shell ... "
